Although many had decorated the graves of fallen Veterans long before it was proclaimed by General John A. Logan with his general order #11 to the Grand Army of the Republic in 1868 it was this order that made this act of patriotism a nation observance.
The Memorial Day parade is a long standing tradition in Rockford where by most accounts began somewhere around 1870 when GAR members along with the Police and Fire Departments gathered at the corner of State and Main and mar...ched to the West side cemetery (Greenwood) where a ceremony took place and the graves of Rockford’s fallen Veterans were decorated. That year Rockford Mayor Seymour G. Bronson requested that all business be suspended as far as practicable from 10 AM until 4 PM and that public schools be closed to the end that all may join in a grateful tribute to honor the dead. Following the west side ceremony member of the parade procession move south on Main St to State St where they crossed the bridge and proceeded to the east side cemetery (Cedar Bluff) where they once again held a ceremony and decorated the graves of fallen Veterans.
